Frequently asked questions
Do I need new hardware?
No. Captive uses the hotspot portal built into UniFi gateways (Dream Machine, Cloud Gateway, and other consoles running the Network app). You create a local admin, and Captive configures the rest.
Who owns the guest emails?
You do. Export them as CSV, pull them from the API, or have them pushed to your tools by webhook, any time.
What do guests experience?
They join your WiFi, your branded page appears, they enter an email, and they're online — usually in under ten seconds. No app, no account.
What happens when my trial ends?
Your dashboard and captured emails stay accessible. After a grace period, portals stop authorizing new guests until you subscribe — reactivation is instant.
Can I use it for a hotel?
Captive is intended for vacation rentals and small venues, and our terms reflect that. Running something bigger? Get in touch and we'll talk.
Is it OK to email guests afterwards?
You control the consent language on your portal (terms text), and you're responsible for complying with the email laws where you operate. The portal records when and where each address was captured.
